He attended a workshop at CTC this past summer and is presently trying to stimulate interest in a wrestling program at his school. Sharon is teaching the preschool department.
Tom Sass: It seems as though your antics at St. Paul are well known. John heard about them through Chuck Peterman.

Summarize life since 1961
I stayed four more years at Seward, finally graduating from CTC in 1965. Sharon Schafer (CHS 62) and I were married in June. Our first call was to Zion Lutheran Church and School in Lyons, Illinois (Chicago area).
Five years later, we were in Yonkers, New York, (DCE and principal). Beginning 1974, we moved to southern California and were to remain on the west coast until 1990. It was here I made the transition from parish education to Lutheran high schools.
Concordia, Missouri, has been our home for twenty years, and Saint Paul Lutheran High School www.splhs.org our focus of ministry. Saint Paul is a residential Lutheran high school, and an RSO of the The Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod.
Something about family and present situation
Sharon and I have been blessed with 4 children and 11 grandchildren. Two of those families live in Concordia, another in nearby Springfield, Mo. Sunday’s are usually extended family day here.. We are country dwellers living in a remodeled farmhouse on some acreage. Closest neighbors are about a mile away.
Retirement plans
Sharon retired over a year ago. I truly enjoy doing what I do, so retirement is not an attractive option for me right now. It is interesting to note that I have been asked the ‘retirement’ question more frequently lately. I’m not sure if these people are curious or just hopeful!
Memory or two about CHS years
Most notably the people. In retrospect, teachers and profs (CHS and CTC) had a formative influence far beyond those eight campus years. Life in Miessler (freshman year roommate Lynn Hanson in 108). The year in ‘X’ . . . Where I can still hear Tex Noack saying in effect “Anybody know what to do for a finger cut in a fan” when mine somehow found its way into the ceiling heating unit. Early football, especially my freshman year. Rancho Sizzlers in Brommer Hall. Extra desserts up on the napkin holders. Hand’s grocery. The trip to Denver for basketball (great oranges). Working for Berning’s crack crew on Saturday mornings for 50 cents an hour. Rivoli movie money. Milt and Claire’s. Roller skating. The Greasy spoon hamburgers. Dale’s Steak house. Ok, I will stop for now. I think I’m over the “Memory or two” thing.
